The author reviews the "epigenetic" scheme of psychosocial development, which he and J. Erikson (1950) developed. In the scheme, the stages of life are designated horizontally, and the basic psychosocial crises are designated diagonally; each stage is dominated by a syntonic and a dystonic quality.
