The authors review (1) Freud's writings on the role of siblings; (2) the research, mostly by analysts, stimulated by his views and the changes in childrearing practices inspired by them; and (3) the writings of analysts since Freud. Findings reveal that although Freud described other aspects of the sibling relationship, the overwhelming emphasis in the psychoanalytic literature is on the rivalry between them; the detrimental effect of the birth of a sibling, sex play, and mutual seduction;... |
