THE APPEARANCE OF SUBLIMATORY ACTIVITIES IN ANALYTIC PATIENTS is often thought to signal recovery from emotional illness. Anna O. suffered from a "hysterical psychosis," present at age 21, which was marked by paraphasia, diplopia, contractures, and paralyses of the extremities and neck, and a mood of anxiety and depression alternating with a state of altered consciousness in which she hallucinated, was paranoid, abusive, and destructive. |
