Resumen:	Observed the responses of 10 children (aged 2–6 yrs) and 10 young adults in free play and in play with unfamiliar objects. The symbolic processes underlying the uses of materials operated across situations. As an approach to seeing how the child works through ambiguity and searches out meanings, the use of chimeric (unfamiliar) objects revealed how free the child or adult was in using his/her fantasy life and his/her security in creating new symbols.
